Wellness At The Whiteboard: 6 Core Values Of Healthy Steps Nutrition

In this Wellness at the Whiteboard, we break down the Healthy Steps Nutrition Framework—a holistic, sustainable approach designed to help people not just manage symptoms, but truly prevent and even reverse chronic disease.

Healthy Steps Nutrition was founded in 2012 by Nicole Aucoin, a Registered Dietitian working in a hospital setting who noticed a hard truth: people were receiving nutrition care after chronic disease had already developed. What they really needed was support 15–20 years earlier.

That realization sparked a mission—to help people make health a way of life, not a short-term fix. Over time, it became clear that nutrition alone isn’t enough. True health requires a comprehensive framework built on daily habits.

That’s where the six pillars of the Healthy Steps Nutrition Framework come in.

Health Is the Outcome of Habits

Health is not just the absence of disease.

It’s the ability to thrive throughout your lifetime.

Health is the outcome of your habits—the small, repeated actions you take every single day.

In fact, about 40% of our daily actions are habits. They’re automatic. You don’t think about buckling your seatbelt when you get in the car—you just do it.

Now here’s the problem: if nearly half of what we do each day is on autopilot, and those habits aren’t supporting our health, then over time, they slowly move us closer to sickness instead of wellness.

Think about it:

  • Sugary drinks without thinking twice

  • Loading coffee with extra sugar

  • Sitting most of the day

  • Cutting sleep short

Individually, these habits may not seem like a big deal. But collectively, day after day, they matter.

The Sickness–Wellness–Fitness Continuum

When we look at health, it’s helpful to think about it as a continuum:

Sickness → Wellness → Fitness

Here’s a startling reality:

  • 60% of U.S. adults already have at least one chronic disease

  • 40% have two or more chronic diseases

But even more concerning?

93% of Americans are metabolically unhealthy or on their way there.

That means the vast majority of people are living somewhere between sickness and wellness—not truly thriving.

And if we stay on that side of the curve, we’re not going to be able to live life to the fullest.

That’s why I’m on a mission to change this.

The Healthy Steps Nutrition Framework: A Holistic Approach

This is exactly why we created the Healthy Steps Nutrition Framework—a holistic, habit-based approach to health.

We focus on six pillars of health:

  1. Nutrition – fueling your body with quality, balanced food

  2. Sleep – supporting hormones, recovery, and energy

  3. Mindset & Stress Management – how you think and cope matters

  4. Exercise – especially strength training

  5. Support System & Community – accountability and connection

  6. Lifestyle – the environment and routines shaping your habits

Health isn’t built in one area alone. These pillars work together to help you become the healthiest version of yourself—one step at a time.

How Do You Know Where You’re At?

The first step is awareness.

Start with an annual checkup and blood work to establish a baseline. Some key markers we look at include:

Blood Sugar (A1C)

  • A1C reflects your 3-month average blood sugar

  • Ideally, this number should be below 5.7

  • Above 6.0 puts you in the diabetic range

Blood Pressure

One of the easiest markers to check regularly—even at home

Body Fat Percentage

  • Especially important beyond just body weight or BMI

  • Women need essential body fat for hormone health

  • Too low can cause hormonal disruption, but too high increases chronic disease risk

At Healthy Steps Nutrition, we use InBody scans to track body composition. For most people, checking this once per month is plenty.

A realistic, sustainable rate of progress?

➡️ About 1% body fat loss per month

That means if someone starts at 35% body fat and wants to reach 25%, a 10-month timeline is not only realistic—it’s healthy.

Why the Other 23 Hours Matter

You can train hard in the gym for one hour a day—but if the other 23 hours aren’t aligned with your health goals, progress will always be capped.

Health requires a 24-hour-a-day approach.

When we intentionally move ourselves along the sickness–wellness–fitness continuum, we become:

  • More resilient

  • More energetic

  • Harder to kill

And most importantly—we get to live life fully.
